The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me

How could it be dangerous to be smart? Well lets see a lot of people are afraid of change. Intelligence and change go hand in hand and there are basically two types of smart, book smart and street smart. Either way you are dangerous to someone or something.
The general public in most cases is attracted to smart people and listens to them and follows them. The control over the free public scares the government and to them is very dangerous but in other cases having different color skin and being smart scares the public and is dangerous in their eyes. The government likes to be in control and when they feel like their losing it they feel as if they are in danger.
What I consider street smart is a normal person with a conscience and common sense. Consider book smart  being able to pick up a textbook and teach yourself that subject with no help. When you posses both of these like our President you become dangerous in the eyes of the public and government plus he has different color skin. The combination of all this really divides this country into two groups smart people and ignorant people. Being too smart for your own good can divide nations.

  1. Hey Brian,
You brought up a good point in regards to their being two kinds of smart. I never really thought about it that way and compare their dangers to others. I also answered the same question but I felt that it brought danger to themselves because most people society degrate those who are smarter than them. Especially in High School where kids will either bully or ridicule the "geeks" for being too smart and for being weak. I like how you mentioned that people can be scared for having a colord person be really smart as they now know their rights and are now willing to voice themselves, stand up for themselves... that's probably why the non-Indians felt fear against the smart Indians

  2. Hi Brain,

I had never really thought about it that way, but you are right that being book smart or street smart might threaten the other person. I guess in a way whatever one person knows that they other doesn't might seem threating.

I liked how you used the government as an example, it fits perfectly. The people are afraid of the government because they have all the power and knowledge about what's going on and they are afraid of us because we can always rebel and may be planning something.

  4. I love your first paragraph, I could of not said it better myself. I think that there are two types of smarts as well, and the educated version is not always best. There are times when you need to be street smart to get by or else you are going to be stuck.

I think you are right when it comes to a person being "smart: by common sense, you would be surprised by how many people do not have common sense. Your comment about the government is so true also, I never really thought of it like that. You have some good views on things, I look forward to reading some more of your posts!

    Cheers,
    Emily

  5. You are totally correct when it comes to being street smart and book smart. Most people today either have a lot of common sense or non at all. Every person though in this world is smart in his or her own way. You just have to take that knowledge and apply it to your daily life and make the best of it.

  6. (: Hi Brian,

I agree that some people are scared to pick up a book because they are afraid of failing. They are afraid that they won't be able to use what they've learned in a positive way, or maybe they just don't know how. I think that having knowledge is one step away from failing.

  7. In this story, I think it was more about how people judged him. His own people judged him and the outside people judged him. He wasn't expected to succeed.. by anyone. For generations, his culture have been pushed down and made to think that they couldn't be anything. So when one of them pushes pass that and breaks the barrier, it is scary. For him, because he knows where he wants to be and he's doing what he can to get there. For his peers who normally doesn't see that and it is different. It's scary especially for the non Indians who judge him because he has already been categorized by them and anything "shocking" or "different" or "not in the norm" for them is scary.
