To achieve integrity its harder than just being honest. To have integrity you must above and beyond honesty. Integrity is like your skin it will always be with you and being stripped of it would hurt. honesty is like your hair it can come and and be changed constantly
You could move to a new town or country and lie all you want and no one would know but your integrity would shine right through and thats only if you have any.
To acheive integrity you must be true to yourself and others and have morals and goals and follow through with them. Also you might want to listen to that little voice in the back of your mind its called a conscience and for the average non criminal human being it usually is on the right path. Lying will infringe on your integrity but wont destroy it. To compromise your integrity you got to be cruel to fellow human beings and have a pattern or habit of lying to yourself.
Brian,
ReplyDeleteI don't think that I necessarily agree with your take on the article. I can see where you're coming from, but I actually think that honesty is a lot easier to achieve than integrity. Personally, I believe that you have to work to have integrity. It doesn't simply come to you.
Honesty is a part of us, even if a lot of the time we choose to be dishonest. With integrity, you have to take certain steps. Carter lays those three steps out for us. Not only do we have to identify what's right and wrong, but we have to act on those findings. Plus we have to let others know that we're acting based on these findings. It's not simple at all. Honesty on the other hand is really a one step deal.
I like your metaphors with honesty and integrity. I agree with your take on them. Integrity takes a lot more self awareness to achieve because you need to be true to yourself and honesty is just a given. Even though honesty is apart of us, it takes alot more out of us to use integrity.
ReplyDeleteI agree with on integrity being harder to achieve than honesty. You can easily starting truths to be more honest but integrity requires to change much more. The metaphors you came up with are great and make sense.
