Smoke Signals

What role does forgiveness play?

Had trouble with this assignment maybe writers block. Essay's where you have to analyze information are harder for me so as much feedback as possible would help. Thank you so much for your time.

Forgiveness in Smoke Signals
In the film Smoke Signals the theme of forgiveness has a role throughout it. The majority of relationships whether they were blood related or just friends required different levels of forgiveness in order for the film to reach resolution. Forgiveness played a huge role in Smoke Signals so the plot could have more substance and reach the audience and teach that to forgive and forget is the right thing to do.
The first relationship I will look at is between Victor and Thomas. During the film Victor shows little positive emotion especially towards Thomas but he continues to live with his heart on his sleeve and a good attitude which means he was constantly forgiving Victor because he loved him like a brother and looked up to him. At one point Victor beat up Thomas because he crossed the line when he spoke about Victor’s father abandoning his family but Thomas almost instantly forgave him or so it seemed. At the end of the film it was Victor’s turn to forgive Thomas because that night the fire had happened Thomas was the one saved by Arnold (Victor’s dad) and Victor was always jealous and mad. He realized Arnold was like both of their father because Arnold was responsible for the fire he forgave Thomas by giving him some of his dads ashes which is a very special point of forgiveness.
Another important part of the movie that showed a great deal of forgiveness was when Victor had to forgive his father which was very hard for him. He did this by traveling to his father’s trailer to go through his belongings and see where he was living to get some closure. His father abandoned him and his mother when he was a young boy so to let go and forgive his father he had to let the resentment and hate leave his heart. This process was aided and expedited by traveling with Thomas which was somewhat of a little struggle and tuff times can create good character in someone or open their eyes because of the experience. Forgiving his father was the peak of forgiveness in Smoke signals making the moral of the film forgiving is the correct path.
One other aspect of forgiveness that popped up was that Victor’s mother had to forgive as well. She had to forgive Arnold for leaving them behind and she also had to forgive Victor for being angry young boy who was acting out but was sad inside so mother forgave him.
I believe forgiveness was one of the main roles of the film. If one cannot or refuses to forgive it lays heavy on the heart and can make you bitter and angry. You can lash out on loved ones and even become depressed which is how Victor’s character was portrayed. This film was about Victor growing up and learning to forgive close people in his life in physical and spirit form. The plot came to a final forgiving moment when he gave Thomas some of the Ashes this showed that Victor had learned to forgive and in the process had become a man by learning on his own and not being taught by his dad. There were other themes in Smoke Signals but forgiveness and growth was the most prevalent.

  1. Hello,

Great job on bringing out not just the forgiveness between Victor and his father but also Victor and Thomas. Although, I believe Lauren likes a more focused essay. You may want to consult with her and it may be she might want you to focus on one relationship and the forgiveness that transpired in that relationship. The introduction could use a stronger thesis statement that is carrying on throughout the rest of the essay. Good conclusion and examples of evidence.

    Thanks for sharing,

  2. I really liked the fact that you used more than one relationship in your paper. The fact that you used the relationship between victor and thomas and victor and his dad was a great idea. One piece of advice that I can give to you is that you should lengthen your fourth paragraph. It is quite short so if you add more details to this paragraph it will not only lengthen out your paper but the paragraph as well. Another piece of advice is put more examples about your personal experiences. Add more to your critical thinking and relate to the character. These ideas will help you to generate thoughts and create a stronger essay. Thank you for the reading.

  3. Brian,

It's good that you pointed out that Victor's mother also had to forgive Arnold. He didn't just abandon his son, but his wife as well. She doesn't make very many appearances in the film. In fact, if I can remember correctly, she only makes one appearance. In this scene she doesn't seem bitter or angry at her husband. She must have understood his internal struggle. In a way it was kind of necessary for him to leave so that he could break away from his past.

You could strengthen your essay by reading it over and making grammatical corrections. I found a few misspelled words. Also you made a very good observation about Victor's mother, but you didn't explain it. You just kind of made a slight observation. You could definitely tell us a little more about how she forgives her husband.

  4. Hello,
Your opening paragraph was great! It gave a good reflection on the message the movie was trying to send, and it clarified that the movie wasn't about a couple of kids' traveling adventures, but about a deep emotion that all the characters had to strive towards. I would suggest re-reading the last sentence in the 2nd paragraph, it sounds like it should be more than 1 sentence.
    Thank you.

  5. I too have a hard time with critical thinking essays. What I try to do to help me out that I would suggest to you is just talk about how you feel about forgiveness. What is your opinion on forgiving people and how do you think it makes a person a better person after they have forgiven someone? How do you think that Victor was after he finally forgave his father? I think that he was a better person and him forgiving his father made him analyze himself and realize his faults. Then he metaphorically asked for Thomas to forgive him when he gave Thomas the ashes. (You stated that Victor forgave Thomas when he gave Thomas the ashes) Each example that was given was great, just maybe for each example talk a little bit more about how forgiving someone can make someone a better person or why it was important to forgive and what that does internally to someone. Your essay is going good. You are not the only one that needs work in the critical thinking area, again, I too have that problem.

  6. HI Brian-

I think that you have a great start to your essay. I know what you mean about this essay tho, it was kinda hard to write because you have to put into words something that you watched vs. something that you read and give evidence without being about to really cite it, its kinda on your memory. But I think that you have a great start, I think that you could maybe lengthen your intro a little bit, seemed a little short, but other than that I think its its great. I agree with Jarrods comment to you about how your used 2 different points of forgiveness in your essay, its 2 different examples that also allows your to provided great supportive evidence throughout your essay.

    1. What is the writer’s thesis? Can you find the statement? Is it the main point the rest of the essay works to develop?

    2. What evidence is cited to prove and support the writer’s thesis? What pieces of evidence are cited from the readings and/or the writer’s observations to support the thesis?

    3. Is the writer’s reasoning/critical thinking provided to explain how the evidence proves and supports the thesis?

    4. What else could the writer cite as evidence in this essay?

    6. What’s strong about the essay? I think that your strongest point in the essay is how you provided more that one example of forgiveness, from victor to thomas, and victor to his father, both are very strong relationships in the movie and you were able to provide great evidence for both!!

    7. What other suggestions or feedback do you want to provide the writer? I just think that the intro is a little short and maybe could be a little longer. Other than that I think that you have a great essay!!!

  7. Thank you everyone for the feedback it helped me a lot. Natalie you have some good ideas but I believe that opinions should be used in the conclusion only because in the body paragraphs it should contain unbiased analytical writing with concrete details or direct quotes. As for Victor apologizing to Thomas at the end when he gave some ashes away to me I saw Victor apologizing to Thomas because Victor was finally letting go of his grudge as well as how he had treated Thomas over the years. It didn't feel like a metaphor for Thomas forgiving Victor. Thank you very much though Natalie your opinion is important to me.
